Facial Hair in Women
We all have hair on our body or face and normal amount of hair on a human’s face and body varies from person to person. Generally, women have facial and body hair but these are usually very light and fine colored hair. If you have more or excessive hair on your face or body, this condition is called hirsutism. The unwanted excessive hair that women grow on their face or body are thick and dark colored which is different from normal hair. These hairs grow on women’s face and body in a pattern that is similar to men’s hair growth pattern.
Causes of Facial Hair in Women
As we all know that every woman has facial hair which is normal but having more facial hair than usual is not normal and condition needs attention. There are certain reasons behind the facial hair in women in general. These include:
Excessive facial hair in women develops because of the higher levels of male hormones which is not normal. These androgens and testosterone are produced by every woman but the levels of this hormone production are low. Some particular health related conditions can result in women producing higher levels of androgens. Higher levels of androgen’s in women results in abnormal or excessive hair growth or other male characteristics such as deep voice.
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
One of most common cause of facial hair in women is polycystic ovarian syndrome. In this condition, cysts on ovaries are formed and it directly affects the hormone levels in women. It increases the androgen levels causing fertility problems and irregular menstrual cycles.
Adrenal glands are less common cause of excessive facial hair in women. Adrenal glands are located above the kidney and can be involved in this condition due to the adult onset congenital adrenal hyperplasia. This condition of adrenal glands is difficult to be diagnosed earlier but it becomes the cause of excessive facial hair or hirsutism. Some women have adult onset congenital adrenal hyperplasia but the symptoms of this condition do not show up until the child reaches the age of adulthood. In this condition, adrenal glands located on upper side of kidneys become larger than the usual and cause abnormal production of male hormones.
Tumors of Ovaries or Adrenal Glands
Androgens are also produced by women’s body due to the formation or development of tumors on ovaries or adrenal glands located above the kidneys. Tumors are also less common cause of facial hair growth in women. However, tumors on adrenal gland or tumor cause severe condition due to the reason that it cause extremely high level of androgens and bring changes in physical conditions. These changes include extreme facial hair growth in women and muscles growth.
Other than health conditions, there are certain medications that cause higher level of androgens leading to excessive facial and body hair growth in women. These medications include anabolic steroids, cyclosporine, phenytoin, testosterone, danazol and glucocorticoids. Oral contraceptives are also responsible for abnormal facial hair growth but it is usually mild.
